

While traditional fighting games such as Street Fighter or Soul Calibur require the player to memorize button-input combinations (sometimes lengthy and complicated, and often specific to a character), Smash Bros uses the same one-attack-button, one-control-stick-direction combinations to access all moves for all characters. Smash Bros.'s play controls are greatly simplified in comparison to other fighting games. Additionally, some characters are heavier than others, making it harder for an opponent to knock them off the edge but likewise harder to recover. When a character is knocked off the stage, he may use jumping moves to (attempt to) return as some characters' jumps are longer-ranged, they may have an easier time "recovering" than others. To KO an opponent, the player must send that character flying off the edge of the stage, which is not an enclosed arena but rather an area with open boundaries, usually a set of suspended platforms. As a character's percentage rises, he can be knocked progressively farther by an opponent's attacks. In Super Smash Bros., characters have a damage total, represented by a percentage value, which rises as they take damage and can exceed 100%. Instead of winning by depleting an opponent's life bar, Smash Bros players seek to knock opposing characters off the stage.

Galactic Battle features several elements from previous games, such as the return of Spirits from Ultimate, as well as a Cinematic Story Mode titled The Elemental Labrynith. franchise (seventh if the 3DS and Wii U versions of Smash 4 are considered their own installments) and is the sequel to the previous installment Super Smash Bros. Battlefield has long made us feel like grunts in a war effort but in the apocalypse, we all have a smidge more tactical flexibility. However, the most useful addition to 2042 is the ability to customize your arsenal on the fly. You will spend a lot of time taking potshots at microscopic targets across the environment, and constantly need to be wary of your flanks. (I came out on top with a shot from my rocket launcher.) The gunplay also feels consistent with the pace and mechanics established in both Battlefield V and Battlefield 1. In one particularly memorable sequence, I found myself at eye-level with a whirring helicopter on top of a building, like an impromptu boss encounter. Once again, EA has created a bedlam-generation machine, with more things going on in every firefight than any one person could possibly process. Environmental apocalypse aside, Battlefield diehards will be right at home in 2042.
